Windfarm Update

Brian Heaton

There have been no new planning applications for new wind farm sites in our areas of concern since the last report. Hopefully this is a reflection on the reduced subsidies that are now available. Two items of news from previous applications are a mixture of good and bad.

The good item concerns the proposed Cnoc An Eas wind farm situated 9 km. west of Drumnadrochit and above Glen Urchart. The application was refused by Highland Council following its submission in 2015 but the developer appealed. On the 2nd of June the Reporter appointed to hear the appeal dismissed it and refused planning permission.

The bad item is the negative outcome of the judicial review requested by the adjacent landowner into the permission granted for the construction of a wind farm on designated wild land at Creag Riabhach near Altnaharra. The response from the Scottish Government Minister concerned when the Trust wrote requesting an assurance that this would not create a precedent was far from reassuring.
