NORTH EAST MOUNTAIN TRUST - WINTER LECTURES 2011-2012A Quality Future for Mountaineers and Hill-Walkers Thursday 15th September 2011Prelude to EverestIan R. MitchellThe first lecture of the season is doubling as a book launch. Youre getting two for one! Ian Mitchell of Mountain Days and Bothy Nights fame has co-written a book about a famous local mountaineer. Alexander Kellas, from Aberdeen, was a pioneer of Himalayan climbing and paved the way for later expeditions. Ian Mitchell needs little introduction. Mountain Days and Bothy Nights is an absolute classic. From fly leaf of Prelude to Everest: "Alexander Mitchell Kellas, who could be considered Scotland's greatest ever Himalayan mountaineer and one of the foremost in the world during his own lifetime, is today a largely neglected figure. Born in Aberdeen in 1868, there was little in his background or his early life that might have suggested that Kellas would become a leading pioneer in the Greater Ranges, exploring and climbing widely in the Sikkim and Garhwal areas, and finally dying on the initial Reconnaissance Expedition to Mount Everest itself in 1921. "This pioneering biography restores Alexander Kellas to his rightful place in Himalayan mountaineering history, by describing in detail his pioneering work in exploration, his groundbreaking high altitude physiology and detailing his list of Himalayan first ascents."
