NORTH EAST MOUNTAIN TRUST - Hill Tracks Survey ProjectA Quality Future for Mountaineers and Hill-Walkers Hill Tracks Survey ProjectProgress ReportWe now have returns from the initial surveys. The areas covered are shown on the map below.
The Pilot Survey of Hilltracks is being carried out in the northeast section of the Cairngorms National Park (see map), bounded by the Dee and the Lairig Ghru. You can pick an area to survey, or simply take photographs and waypoints wherever you have chosen to walk. We can give you suggestions of where to go, if you want. Ideally, everybody simply surveys where they would have chosen to go for a walk in any case.
We'd still like to hear from you if you think you can help. You do not have to be an NEMT Member to participate. You will need to have, or be able to borrow, a hand-held GPS device and a digital camera. We'll send you a CD with instructions and another for you to record and return the data. So, you will also need to have access to a CD writer on a computer. The pack we'll send you also includes a plasticized instruction sheet to carry in your rucksack. If you don't have access to a GPS system and would still like to participate please also let us know and "we will see what we can do!" Scottish Natural Heritage and the Cairngorms National Park Authority are supporting this Project; indeed we are grateful to CNPA for funding to cover the cost of the work in putting together all the individual data submissions into a coherent structure. NEMT CLUB REPS: Clearly this is an item where your active participation in promoting NEMT's Pilot Survey to your Members is going to be very helpful towards the success of the Project. On this basis, please can we encourage you to encourage your own Club Members to join in. REGISTERING YOUR WILLINGNESS TO PARTICIPATE: If you would like to become involved, please email hilltracks@nemt.org.uk and we will send you the CDs. We hope you see this as an opportunity to play a part in doing something positive to help protect our Cairngorms National Park, learn new skills utilising the new IT tools that have only become available in recent years and "Get involved". |
